The Michigan Chamber of Commerce supports the concept of proposed legislation that would place Wayne County's Detroit Metropolitan Airport under the governance of a Wayne County airport authority.

"We are pleased that Wayne County Executive Edward H. McNamara and Governor John Engler have endorsed this proposed legislation," said Michigan Chamber President & CEO Jim Barrett. "The opening of the new McNamara World Terminal, coupled with Metro's new 4th parallel runway, makes it imperative that the airport be managed like the multi-million dollar business that it is."

"Detroit Metro's significant financial impact benefits not only southeast Michigan, but also the entire state," added Barrett. "The proposed legislation addresses the concerns of the business community and recognizes the importance to Michigan of a well-managed world-class airport."

"The Michigan Chamber of Commerce urges prompt consideration of this legislation," Barrett concluded.

The Michigan Chamber is a statewide business organization representing approximately 7,000 employers, trade associations and local chambers of commerce. The Michigan Chamber was established in 1959 to be an advocate for Michigan's job providers in the legislative, political and legal process.
