Michigan Chamber Foundation to Release Major Study Of Michigan's Tax Climate, May 21
May 17, 2002
On Tuesday, May 21st at 10:00 a.m. in Rooms 402-403 at the State Capitol, the Michigan Chamber Foundation will release a public policy study entitled, "Michigan's Tax Climate: A New Perspective." The Michigan Chamber Foundation is a 501©(3) non-profit organization established to plan, promote and conduct non-partisan educational research and programs regarding important public policy issues facing Michigan. The study was prepared by Charles L. Ballard, Ph.D., professor of economics at Michigan State University.
Most recent studies of Michigan's tax climate have been written by government officials for government officials. This study updates traditional public sector measures of Michigan's tax climate, but adds a taxpayer perspective to the debate by: (1) calculating the cost of state and local taxes on a per-hour-worked basis; and (2) calculating the cost of state and local taxes on a per-worker per-year basis. These two new measures will make it easier for employees and employers to understand and participate in the ongoing debate over taxes and spending.
In addition to Dr. Ballard, Michigan Chamber President & CEO Jim Barrett, and Tricia Kinley, Director of Tax Policy & Economic Development for the Chamber, will participate in the press conference.
