The Michigan Chamber of Commerce honored Michigan State University (MSU) President M. Peter McPherson with its 2001 Award for Distinguished Service and Leadership. McPherson received the award during the Michigan Chamber's Board of Directors meeting held today at the Grand Traverse Resort.

"Peter McPherson brings to MSU, to the State of Michigan, and to higher education, a unique perspective based on his public and private sector experience," said Michigan Chamber President & CEO Jim Barrett. "We are very proud to recognize Peter for his past accomplishments and current contributions as President of Michigan State University."
Peter McPherson was named MSU's 19th president in 1993. Prior to coming to MSU, Peter's career included serving as Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Treasury Department (under the Reagan-Bush Administration), Administrator of the Agency for International Development (AID), Chairman of the Board of Overseas Private Investment Corporation, and Special Assistant to President Ford and Deputy Director of the Presidential Personnel Office. His career also included serving as managing partner of the Washington office of a large Midwest law firm and Group Executive Vice President of the San Francisco-based Bank of America.
Past winners of the Michigan Chamber's Award for Distinguished Service and Leadership in the Public Sector include: Michigan Lieutenant Governor Connie Binsfeld; former Michigan Supreme Court Justices Dorothy Comstock Riley and Robert Griffin; former Speaker of the House Paul Hillegonds; Michigan State Treasurer Doug Roberts; former Federal Reserve Board Governor Martha Seger; Gerald Miller, who previously served as director of Michigan's Family Independence Agency; former Detroit News editorial editor Tom Bray; print and broadcast journalist Timothy C. Skubick; and the late Governor George Romney.
The Michigan Chamber of Commerce is a statewide business organization which represents approximately 7,000 employers, trade associations and local chambers of commerce. The Michigan Chamber was established in 1959 to be an advocate for Michigan's job providers in the legislative, political and legal process.
