The Michigan Chamber of Commerce today announced its gubernatorial, Michigan Supreme Court and congressional endorsements for the fall 2002 elections.

  The Michigan Chamber is endorsing Dick Posthumus for Governor.

"Based upon background, experience and positions on key issues, Dick Posthumus is clearly the best candidate for Governor," said Michigan Chamber President & CEO Jim Barrett. "We're confident that Dick Posthumus has the vision and the leadership skills to keep Michigan moving forward."

The Chamber is backing two candidates for the Michigan Supreme Court. They are incumbent Justices Elizabeth A. Weaver and Robert P. Young, Jr.

"Voters who believe in our system of checks and balances must not forget about the importance of voting to return responsible and experienced justices to the Michigan Supreme Court," noted Barrett. "Those candidates are Betty Weaver and Bob Young."

Nine Congressional candidates have received the Michigan Chamber's endorsement. They are: Peter Hoekstra (2nd District); Vernon Ehlers (3rd District); Dave Camp (4th District); Fred Upton (6th District); Nick Smith (7th District); Mike Rogers (8th District); Joe Knollenberg (9th District); Candice Miller (10th District); and Thad McCotter (11th District).

"The Michigan Chamber's support for nine members of our Congressional Delegation is based on the voting records with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce," said Bob LaBrant, Senior Vice President of Political Affairs for the Michigan Chamber. "With strong candidates and redistricting, Michigan has the opportunity for the first time in many years to send a delegation to Washington, D.C., that strongly supports job creation and economic growth."

Survey research has shown that the Michigan Chamber's endorsement is one of the most important a candidate can receive.

The Michigan Chamber of Commerce is a statewide business organization representing approximately 7,000 employers, trade associations and local chambers of commerce. The Michigan Chamber of Commerce was established in 1959 to be an advocate for Michigan's job providers in the legislative, political and legal process.
