The Michigan Business Leaders for Education Excellence (MBLEE) announced the addition today of Birmingham schools to the Profile of Achievement and School Success (PASS) report originally released May 23, 2002. MBLEE is a program of the Michigan Chamber Foundation.
The Birmingham schools recognized were: Elementary Middle Beverly Elementary School Berkshire Middle School Bingham Farms Elementary School Birmingham Covington School Birmingham Covington School Derby Middle School Greenfield Elementary School Harlan Elementary School Pierce Elementary School Quarton Elementary School West Maple Elementary School
The Birmingham schools were originally reported as exempt schools due to the absence of the district's MEAP data. Test scores have since been released and verified by the Center for Education Performance and Information (CEPI).
PASS identifies elementary and middle schools where 75 percent or more of the students scored at the proficient level or better over the last two years on all areas of the MEAP test, excluding social studies. The full report is available at http://www.michamber.com/ under "Education Reform K-12."
PASS was developed to publicly recognize those schools that successfully achieved high academic performance by consistently meeting or exceeding state standards. PASS was also created as an alternative to the absence of a state accreditation system to inform the public, parent and business community of local school performance.
PASS data was compiled by Dr. Michael Williamson, former Assistant Superintendent of Public Instruction for the Michigan Department of Education.
