The Michigan Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors last week voted to oppose Proposal 4, the proposed Constitutional Amendment earmarking Tobacco Settlement Revenue.

"While the Michigan Chamber supports increased state support of efficient, quality health care delivery, we believe a more equitable allocation of state funds from all sources can, and should, be made through the appropriations process, not as the result of a constitutional mandate," said Robert LaBrant, Senior Vice President of Political Affairs and General Counsel for the Michigan Chamber.

"The Michigan Chamber strongly disagrees with the specificity of those public and private organizations that would be receiving funds if Proposal 4 were adopted," added LaBrant. "We are concerned that if Proposal 4 is adopted, other interest groups will be lining up with their own petition drives to achieve a constitutionally mandated share of the state's budget."

"Proposal 4 is bad public policy and should be defeated," concluded LaBrant.

The Michigan Chamber is a statewide business organization representing approximately 7,000 employers, trade associations and local chambers of commerce. The Michigan Chamber was established in 1959 to be an advocate for Michigan's job providers in the legislative, political and legal process.
